Santa Cruz resident Kim Sperling [Red Racing] placed third in the women’s pro Cat 1/2 open division at Foothill College’s Learning Curve Bike Circuit Race and was just one of three Santa Cruz County riders to finish in the top five of any division on Sunday.

Sperling was third behind winner Kate Finegan [Building Champion Squad] and runner-up Ellen Anderson [Touchstone Climbing] of San Francisco.

The other county riders who placed in the top five of  their divisions were Michelle Heaton [Sycomp Racing] took fourth in the women’s Cat 3 open division and Steven Sperling [unattached] took fifth in the men’s Cat 3 open division.

Capitola residents Nate Doss, the defending disc golf world champion, and Valarie Jenkins placed in the top five of their respective divisions in the Stockholm Discgolf Open over the weekend after first missing their flight out of the United States.

Doss was fourth in the men’s open, shooting a 17-under 235; and Jenkins was second in the women’s open, shooting a 20-over 272. Nashville’s Will Schusterick won the men’s open, which had 160 competitors, with a 24-under 228. Texas’ Paige Pierce won the women’s open, which had 12 competitors, with a 12-over 264.

Capitola’s Avery Jenkins, Valarie’s brother, landed in a four-way tie for 10th in the men’s open with a 10-under 242.

Doss and Jenkins missed their flight from New York on June 24 and eventually left the country June 25, according to their Twitter feeds, and Doss went straight to the course upon arrival.

The Stockholm Discgolf Open was a Professional Disc Golf Association event, running from June 28-July 1, and results included in this report are from the PDGA website.

Santa Cruz resident Tobin Ortenblad took second in the men’s junior 15-18 age division of the Galena Grinder Whit Henry Memorial mountain bike race in Ketchum, Idaho, on Saturday.

Ortenblad [Ritte Elite U23 Development Team] was runner-up behind Marcus Segedin of Greenbrae.

Team director Stu Bone, also from Santa Cruz, placed sixth in the men’s Cat 2 Master 30-39 age division race, which was won by Ketchum’s Colin Rodgers.
