Aptos resident Jenna Belton and Palo Alto’s Kirsten Mead combined forces and went on a nine-match winning streak to take the 16-and-under open title in the USA Beach Volleyball Junior Tour Championship at Bradford Beach in Milwaukee over the weekend.

They kept momentum going off a recent victory in a California Beach Volleyball Association tournament in Santa Barabara, where they qualified for the Cal Cup Championship scheduled for Manhatten Beach later this summer.

They defeated the duo of Amber Davis and Julia Lewkowski in the final at Bradford Beach for the win. Scores were unavailable.

Santa Cruz resident and pro surfer Nat Young brought up the rear in the Nike U.S. Open of Surfing’s “No Loser” Round of 24 early this afternoon in Huntington Beach.

Young scored 9.27 points based on a his best two wave scores to finish behind Brazil’s Gabriel Medina, who won the heat with 19.03 points, and Hawaii’s Granger Larsen, who earned a 15.20-point score.

Medina advances to the Round of 16, while Young and Larsen move on to the elimination Round of 24. There, Young will face Australian Mitchel Coleborn, who earlier topped Young in the Round of 48. Heats in the Round of 24 are a man vs. man elimination format.

The event continues this weekend and streams live on the U.S. Open site.
