SWATCH

Santa Cruz native Cody Townsend was selected in mid-January to captain Team Americas, which will face Team Europe, for the 2013 Swatch Skiers Cup in Zermatt, Switzerland.

The competition, scheduled to be held Feb. 10-15, pits some of the best big mountain, free skiers and slopestyle athletes against each other. This will be the third annual Skiers Cup and first held in Europe.

Townsend will lead teammates KC Deane, Rory Bushfield, Charley Ager, Logan Imlach, Timy Dutton and Josh Daiek, with an eighth rider to be announced.

Together, they face the Team Europe skiers: Captain Kaj Zackrisson, Markus Elder, Paddy Graham, Richard Permin, Sverre Liliequist, Nicolas Vuignier, Fabio Studer, as well as an eighth to be announced.

Ben Lomond resident Nick Sherrell settled for second place in Brazen Racing’s Coyote Hills Half Marathon at the Coyote Hills Regional Park in Fremont on Sunday.

Sherrell, 19, finished the 13.1-mile race in 1 hour, 22 minutes, 2 seconds, about five minutes back of winner Brad Parker of San Jose [1:17:22]. Brian Callejas of Fremont rounded out the top three [1:24:59].

Justine Owen of Kensington won the women’s race [1:31:16].

The next Brazen Racing event is the Bay Breeze event, which includes a half marathon, 10-kilometer race, and 5-kilometer race. The event is scheduled for Feb. 8 at Quarry Lakes.

Aptos resident Nikia Brautovich won the Rotary Mission Ten 10-miler on Saturday, crossing the finish line of the footrace in San Juan Bautista in 1 hour, 3 minutes, 39 seconds for first place among women and 22nd place overall.

Brautovich was followed by Stephanie Kato in second place [1:04:13] and Amy Johnston in third place [1:05:15].

Michael Ramirez won the men’s title in 56:24.
