Santa Cruz husband and wife duo make top 100 in Vineman half-Aquabike

Paul and Kathryn Vroomen made their mark in the Vineman half-Aquabike competition in Sonoma County over the weekend.

Paul Vroomen, 56, was the top Santa Cruz-area finisher in 18th overall, and Kathryn Vroomen, 49, was 24th among women [73rd overall].

Paul Vroomen finished 13h among men and second in the men’s 55-59 age division, completing the 1.2-mile swim and 56-mile bike race in 3 hours, 22 minutes, 18 seconds. He did the swim in 34:58 and the bike in 2:43:23.

Ventura’s Mike Shaffer, 47, won the race in 2:47:57.

Kathryn Vroomen finished the swim in 36:13 and the bike in 3:20:05 en route to a 4:00:37 finish. She was sixth in the women’s 45-49 age division.

The women’s overall winner was Whitney Garcia of Boulder, Colo. Her time was 3:00:05.

Two Santa Cruz area triathletes place in top 25 of Ironman 70.3 Vineman

Santa Cruz resident Paul Matthews was one of two county residents to place in the top 25 of the Ironman 70.3 Vineman triathlon in Sonoma County on July 15, coming in third overall.

Matthews completed the race in 3 hours, 47 minutes, 55 seconds to finish behind winner Greg Bennet of Boulder, Colo., [3:45:39] and runner-up Joe Gambles, also of Boulder [3:46:14].

Matthews, 29, finished the 1.2-mile swim in 21:54, the 56-mile bike in 2:07:09, and the 13.1-mile run in 1:15:54.

Fellow Santa Cruz resident and pro triathlete Eric Clarkson placed 23rd [4:13:27]. He finished the swim in 23:35, the bike in 2:20:41 and the run in 1:25:25.

The event was a qualifier for the Ironman World Championships, which will be held in Las Vegas in September.

Santa Cruz’s Devon Gorry makes top 20 in Exergy Twilight Crit

Santa Cruz resident and pro cyclist Devon Gorry placed 20th in the women’s pro Cat 1/2 division of the Exergy Twilight Crit in Boise, Idaho, on Saturday.

Gorry crossed the finish line in 57 minutes, according to results on USACycling.com, while winner Kristin McGrath of Boise [Exergy Twenty12] won in 45 minutes flat.

Gorry rides for Now and Novartis for MS.
