Capitola’s Valarie Jenkins takes fifth in US Women’s Disc Golf Championship

Capitola resident Valarie Jenkins finished in fifth place at the United States Women’s Disc Golf Championship, a Professional Disc Golf Association-sanctioned event, in Huntsville, Ala., on Sept. 23.

Jenkins threw a 5-under 292 over five rounds for a $950 prize.

Catrina Allen of  Phoenix became the new national champion with a 14-under 283, taking home a $3,160 prize. Paige Pearce of Plano, Texas, took second, also with a 14-under 283, for a $2,100 prize; and Sarah Hokom of Caldwell, Idaho, took third with a 10-under 287 for a $1,500 prize.

Capitola’s Valarie Jenkins ties for second at Vibram Open disc golf tourney

Capitola’s Nate Doss takes 9th in men’s open

Capitola resident and pro disc golfer Valarie Jenkins finished just one throw off winner Catrina Allen in the women’s open division of the PDGA-sanctioned Vibram Open at Maple Hill in Leicester, Mass., on Sunday.

Both Jenkins and Sarah Hokom of Caldwell, Idaho, threw 66s in the final round to land at 23-over 263 for the tournament. Allen of Phoenix won the event with a 64 in the final round [262 total].

“Yup.. lost by 1 stroke, again.” Jenkins tweeted after the event.

Most recently, Jenkins missed out on a win by one stroke in the world championships.

Jenkins’ partner Nate Doss also competed, taking ninth in the open men’s division with a 14-under 226 over four rounds. Jenkins’ brother Avery Jenkins took 21st overall [235], and Aptos disc golfer Shasta Criss placed 35th [246]. Cale Leiviska of St. Paul, Minn., won with a 215.

Captiola’s Valarie Jenkins finishes runner-up for second straight year at World Disc Golf Championships

Professional disc golfer and Capitola resident Valarie Jenkins placed second in the PDGA’s World Disc Golf Championships in Charlotte, N.C., missing the international title by just one throw over the weekend.

Jenkins, who also finished second at last year’s worlds, shot a 24-under 404 through the eight-round tournament. She placed behind champion Sarah Hokom [25-under 403] of Caldwell, Idaho, but ahead of third-place finisher Catrina Allen of Phoenix.

“Like the ESPN commercial I keep seeing.. “If losing didn’t hurt so bad, winning wouldn’t feel as good” #1strokefromvictory” Jenkins tweeted later.

Capitola’s Nate Doss, the defending men’s world champ, placed seventh in his division with a 65-under 374 through seven rounds. Only four players make the final round.

Paul McBeth of Clearwater, Fla., became the new world champ with an 83-under 387 through eight rounds. Richard Wysocki of Fort Mill, S.C., was second [392] and Nashville’s Will Schusterick was third [396].

Aptos’ Shasta Criss placed 24th overall with a 43-under 396 and Avery Jenkins, Valarie Jenkins’ brother, tied for 39th with a 37-under 402.
