Capitola’s Shaun Burrell and the UC San Diego surf team won the National Scholastic Surfing Association’s Southwest College event No. 2 the weekend of Nov. 17-18 for what was the team’s first victory in six years, according to the NSSA Facebook page.
UCSD scored 129 points to San Diego State’s 127 points, and UCSD’s Mikey Ciaramella won all of his heats, taking the men’s division win, according to the NSSA Facebook page.

UC San Diego surfer Shaun Burrell, who is from Capitola, placed sixth in the men’s college final of the National Scholastic Surfing Association’s Interscholastic Championships at Salt Creek in Dana Point over the weekend.
Burrell scored 9.56 points in the final heat. Mira Costa’s Dayton Silva won with a whopping 17.03 points.
Burrell’s finish helped his team to eighth place overall with 58 points. Mira Costa’s Red team won the overall team title with 152 points.
