Santa Cruz native and pro surfer Nat Young had one of his top performances in competition this year, making it to the semifinals of the 13th annual Mr. Price Pro Ballito at Willard Beach in South Africa.

Young eliminated South African Jordy Smith — former Mr. Price champion and No. 13 surfer in the world  according to the Association of Surfing Professionals — in the quarterfinals. Young scored a even 15 points based on his best two waves (each is scored on a 10-point scale). Smith scored a 12.00.

In the semifinals, Young was ousted by Ireland’s Glenn Hall by just a fraction of a point. Young scored a 14.50 heat total, while Hall scored a 14.67 heat total.

“Semis is good, but ain’t good enough,” Young tweeted afterwards.

Hall went on to be crowned Mr. Price Pro Ballito, beating American Nathaniel Curran in the final 15.00-13.67.
