Danilo Couto is from Brazil, but he’s been charging Maverick’s up near Half Moon Bay for a long time. This is his Billabong XXL entry for the coveted Ride of the Year award, according to Surfer’s Village.
The last big swell of 2012 hit Santa Cruz over the weekend. This is a little video I put together during my shift yesterday of some Sunday morning action down at the Lane.
Santa Cruz surfer and filmmaker Kyle Buthman’s third installment in the Get Rad series, “Get Rad 3,” is scheduled to premiere at the Rio Theatre at 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 22.
Buthman’s “Get Rad” films use comedy to break the traditional surf-film mold, while highlighting local talent at area breaks. Nat Young, Austin Smith-Ford, Noi Kaulukukui, Darshan Gooch, Noah Wegrich, Kyle Thierman, Bud Frietas, Adam Replogle, Shaun Burns, Miles Clanton and Nic H’dez all show off their surfing — and also some stellar acting as they perform short skits — in “Get Rad 3.”
“I’m really stoked to make another episode of the ‘Get Rad’ series,” Buthman said in a press release. “I wasn’t sure if we were going to pull it off this year, but it all came together.”
Tickets are $8 at the door, which opens at 6:30 p.m. Children 8 and under are free.
I made it out to the O’Neill Coldwater Classic just in time for the finals yesterday, and was able to throw together this little video of Taj after his win with some footage of the last heat. Enjoy!
Spectators from around the world lined West Cliff Drive in Santa Cruz to catch glimpses of World Championship Tour surfers as they competed in the O’Neill Coldwater Classic on Nov. 4, 2012. This is the video I put together with their thoughts on the event, with photos of the surfers by Shmuel Thaler.
These are some behind-the-scenes videos from gbgals2 on YouTube for the up-and-coming “Chasing Mavericks” movie. They include interviews with the actors and “surf stuntmen,” including Santa Cruz native Peter Mel. Enjoy!
Can you spot the dude running in a tutu? It’s a quick cameo, so keep an eye out.
Several extreme climbers will be shown in the film, including Chris Sharma, a native Santa Cruzan, as he “and Adam Ondra battle to establish the world’s first 5.15c,” according to the Rio’s website.

This is a video of the event. Enjoy!
