Drew Perkins with the City of Santa Cruz reports that the next Pogonip workday will be Sunday, December 2nd. You don’t have to have experience. Just know how to shovel dirt, rake leaves and follow directions. That’s what I did and you can read about it here when I made my debut at trail work recently. Here’s the story from my monthly Spin City cycling column.  Keep reading for details on the next trail work day on Sunday, December 2. To make a donation to the trail, click here:

“This trail will connect U-Con to Golf Club Drive and is designed to be a sustainable, beginner friendly, and fun way to get from downtown Santa Cruz to Henry Cowell, the upper UCSC Campus, and Wilder Ranch State Park. We had a great workday last Saturday with almost 30 volunteers and we have now logged over 2,000 volunteer hours for this project, awesome!” said Drew Perkins, the trail work organizer.

Meet at the bottom of the U-Con singletrack at 9 a.m. and working three to four hours. We will work rain or shine, but high winds may cancel due to safety concerns.

We will have a pizza lunch afterwards sponsored by Caletti Cycles. We will have very tasty coffee to get us started provided by Verve Coffee Roasters.

Please bring sturdy shoes, long pants, gloves, and water. Tools will be provided.

To make sure there are enough tools and pizza, sign up in advance at

The Museum of Art and History presents their “3rd Friday” event 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, June 15. The second annual Race Through TIme is a city-wide scavenger hunt. Registration required. Keep reading for details. — Karen Kefauver

The MAH’s Race Through Time is a thrilling around-the-town scavenger hunt that will get you whizzing through Santa Cruz history, while biking or walking down sunny streets with friends and competitors.

Organized by the Museum of Art & History, Race Through Time is back and better this year with a biking and walking component, daring new clues, awesome prizes, and surprise challenges along the way. Providing a new way to learn old stories, the rules for Race Through Time are simple:

Participating racers will form teams of 2 to 5, and together, work to solve a packet of 20 clues that reveal places in Santa Cruz that hold historical significance. Upon solving each clue and finding each corresponding location, racers will earn points towards their grand total of points— which can earn them a bundle of worthy prizes, including a MAH membership.

Extra points will be rewarded to the best-dressed team and teams who participate in surprise-challenges held at various locations. When the clock strikes 8 p.m., all racers must be back at the Museum, where they can cool down with an iced beer and other refreshing beverages and snacks.
