Watsonville resident Natalia Grossman, 11, won the female youth-C division in the American Bouldering Series Regional Championship for Northern California at City Beach Rock Club in Fremont on Sunday.

Grossman dominated her division, climbing to the win and 100 points in the USA Climbing-sanctioned event. Jenny Jiang of Reno, Nevada, was second for the Sierra Climbing Team [90 points] and Kathryn Garcia of Portola Valley was third for the Planet Granite team [80 points].

Grossman climbs for Zero Gravity under Scott Jenerik. This marks her third-straight win in ABS action.

Santa Cruz resident Sebastian Villanueva, 16, and Watsonville resident Natalia Grossman, 11, won their respective divisions of USA Climbing‘s American Bouldering Series Local 14 event at Pacific Edge Climbing Gym on Oct. 13.

Villanueva, who is on the Pacific Edge team coached by Bill Tang, had a score of 26,965 points to take the male junior division by a margin of just five points. Andy Lamb, 18, of Lexington, Mass., placed second for Team Waimea, and Aaron Splady, 17, of Berkeley placed third with 16,995 points for Zero Gravity.

Grossman, who also competes with Zero Gravity and is coached by Scot Jenerik, won the female youth-C division with 18,070 points. Saratoga’s Niamh Moore [Planet Granite] was second with 15,775 points and Portola Valley’s Kathryn Garcia [Planet Granite] was third with 15,280 points.

Santa Cruz residents Sebastian Villanueva and Julianna Lo each won their divisions in USA Climbing’s American Bouldering Series 14 Local regional event at Sanctuary Rock Gym in Sand City on Sept. 22.

Villanueva, 16, won the male junior division with 28,440 points. He was followed by Radu  Mihai Popescu Stanesti [Planet Granite, San Jose] in second place with  27,330 points, and Aria Crabb [City Beach, Fremont] in third with 20,390 points. Villanueva climbs with the Pacific Edge team.

Lo, 10, won the female youth-D division with 10,540 points. She was followed by Phoebe Wong [Planet Granite, Sunnyvale] in second place with 9,550 points and Lauren Berry [Zero Gravity, Sacramento] in third with 7,590 points. Lo climbs with Team Edge.

The next ABS 14 Local event in California is scheduled for Oct. 13 at Pacific Edge in Santa Cruz.

The Reel Rock 7 tour will come to the Rio Theatre in Santa Cruz on Oct. 5 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 online and at the Pacific Edge climbing gym, or $12 at the door.

Several extreme climbers will be shown in the film, including Chris Sharma, a native Santa Cruzan, as he “and Adam Ondra battle to establish the world’s first 5.15c,” according to the Rio’s website.

Two Santa Cruz County climbers captured wins in their divisions at the Sports Climbing Series stop at Pacific Edge last weekend.

Santa Cruz resident Charlotte Bansal [Pacific Edge] won the female youth-A division in what was a huge turnaround from her last Northern California local competition. In late March, Bansal placed ninth in her division at Sanctuary Rock Gym in Seaside. Saturday, the 16-year-old redeemed herself with an 8,390-point win, according to results from USA Climbing.

Watsonville resident Natalia Grossman, 10, continued to dominate in the female youth-D division, taking home her second straight victory. Grossman [Zero Gravity Climbing] earned 9,800 points with her win.

The next Northern California local Sports Climbing Series event is scheduled for Saturday at the Rocknasium in Davis.
