Danilo Couto is from Brazil, but he’s been charging Maverick’s up near Half Moon Bay for a long time. This is his Billabong XXL entry for the coveted Ride of the Year award, according to Surfer’s Village.

Santa Cruz native and pro surfer Nat Young was eliminated by a fraction of a point from the Nike Lowers Pro, an Association of Surfing Professionals event at Lower Trestles in San Clemente, over the weekend.

Young scored a two-wave combined point total of 16.30 to┬áJeremy Flores’ [France] 16.70 in the second heat of the round. All waves are scored on 10-point scales. Young captured the highest point total for a wave — a 9.63 — in the two-man elimination heat, but he ultimately lost to Flores’ two eight-plus point waves.

Brazil’s Gabriel Medina eventually won the contest, scoring 15.67 points in the final heat vs. Ireland’s Glenn Hall [10.87], according to results from the Nike Lowers Pro website.
