Long-time local skater Judi Oyama was the 2012 honoree for the ninth annual Mighty Mama Skate-O-Rama this past Sunday in San Jose.

Oyama, who works as a graphics designer in Santa Cruz, followed her brother into the sport and, at 19, became a professional, world-class rider in the 1970-80s.

“I just wanted to get better than him,” she said to the Bay Area News Group during the event. “And I did.”

The group honored Oyama for her lifetime achievements in skateboarding, but even at age 52 and with two preteen boys at home, she has not retired her board. Oyama won the world championship of skateboard racing in 2003 and still competes in the masters division — against men. On frequent visits to Lake Cunningham’s skate park, she likes to encourage parents to join their children in the fun.

“It just feels good to be able to skateboard at my age,” Oyama said.

Volcom on Friday posted this video of Santa Cruz High grad Raven Tershy and others during their Euro trip in Malmo, Sweden, last summer. There’s some seriously sweet shots in there. Tershy is the first Santa Cruz-area native to win an X Games medal.

This video is part two of four, so be sure to check out the other parts on Volcom’s channel.
